March “Firsts”

Surprise and delight continue.  I gave my first bookstore “reading” with great attendance and wonderful discussion. I offered my first “program” at the library giving an experiential taste of some ideas in the book. My old computer died and I, the technophobe, went to get a new one—all by myself. With the added capacity, I took a huge leap into new technology, got myself a camera, and conducted an experiment creating a YouTube video. The “reading” 3/18

What fun it was to gather a crowd of friends and folks I didn’t know for the “first” reading of what I hope are many more. Great questions, great conversation, lots of fun.  Actually I attend many readings at my local bookstore to meet authors on topics of interest to me.  Great way to get an education.  And now to BE one.

Gift of discouragement

Serendipitous conversations are where I find ideas I want to highlight and honor. I had just met Joan. As usual, the topic of the book opened the floodgates for her story. She was a teacher who initially found her passionate calling in the elementary classroom.  But, large classes, teaching to the tests, unfunded mandates, disciplinary problems, kids with no support at home were taking their toll.   On the other hand, Read the rest of this entry »

Your views: allies or enemies?

Ever in experimental mode, this 70-year old went to a musical program at Mt. Holyoke College as a “billboard”. I wore my new t-shirt featuring my book’s  Why Not Do You Love? question and cover art. On the way to the lobby during intermission, a grumpy gentleman brushed by me mumbling:  “How many reasons do you want?”  He obviously didn’t want to converse.

He represented for me a perfect example of the world view of “impossibility” where no matter what you want, or need, or think would be more enlivening, you can’t have it, don’t deserve it, and “they” won’t give it to you!    How open are you, dear reader, Read the rest of this entry »
